Maize on Green is now officially closed as demolition is imminent for the little building on the corner of First and Green Streets. Maize Mexican Grill first opened its original Green Street location in 2011 and has since expanded to include a full-service restaurant in Downtown Champaign, a taco truck, and a spot in the Union food court, all of which will continue to operate.

Before the spot was a taco shack, it was home to Ye Olde Donut Shoppe, Noe’s Grill and BBQ, and Derald’s restaurant.

I’m going to miss the charm of this location. Sure, the place was tiny, but it was cool to get one of the few seats and throw down chips and tacos in the spot where it all started for Maize.

Rest in peace, Maize on Green (2011-2024).

For a trip down memory lane, revisit Seth’s original review of Maize from back when it opened in 2011.
