The restaurant Mama Meta’s Canteen served African-inspired, American-infused cuisine by Lauren Mulowayi. All food was takeout only, and diners picked up at The Refinery in Champaign. The kitchen has been closed for awhile, but the restaurant recently announced that it will not reopen. In the future, the owners may create a different type of service with a new name.

Learn about the Congolese-inspired comfort food in my review of Mama Meta’s Canteen. I loved the ghost kitchen’s samosas and poulet mayo. Read the message the business shared on socials:

Unfortunately, the Canteen is not coming back this Summer as originally planned but we have great news. We at Mama Meta’s Canteen love all the support from the community and we see the impact we have made right here in Champaign County. Here in Central Illinois, it is now three Congolese independently owned licensed restaurant/caterers. Being the first license open to the public Congolese cuisine caterer/restaurant, this fills our hearts to see the growth in such little time. Even though we’re taking a step back from day-to-day operations, we’re still active on all social media platforms and in the community and can’t wait for the future adventures to come.

We will not leave you hanging, with this being said we highly recommend you to check out Les Gourmets Cuisine by Christelle for all you DRC cuisine needs. They are a Black, family-owned small business that provide great customer service and authentic food. Not only is there food delicious they are just overall good people and what’s not to support.
