March 11: Tonight, tonight, tonight, OOOOooooh

So much for that warm weather we were enjoying. Let’s find some events for you to do inside this evening, eh?

+ RAWK! Tonight at 6:30 p.m., the Virginia Theatre hosts a Battle of the Bands for local teenage rock stars in training. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students. Ear plugs optional.

+ Those with a basic knowledge of homeopathy are invited to join a homeopathic study group at the Urbana Free Library at 7 p.m. in the downstairs conference room.

+ Bone up on international activism with a free screening of the film Gie, the story of Soe Hok Gie, a Chinese-Indonesian student activist in the 1960s. 7 p.m. at the UIUC Main Library.

+ Feeling officially Irish? Bentley’s Pub in downtown Champaign hosts live traditional Irish music from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. tonight.

+ Looking for controversy? Bill Ayers is still hanging around campus (tonight’s free 7 p.m. talk is titled “Education for Democracy”), or you could catch a $6, 8 p.m. viewing of The Station’s current play, Whitey, which has provided us with an interesting discussion this week.

+ Maybe you’d like to throw a few back at a longtime Urbana watering hole, the Embassy, which is sadly going out of business. Paul Faber is rocking the karaoke there tonight.

+ MORE RAWK! The Phoenix hosts a hard rock/metal showcase of local/regional bands, including Misery Index, Seven Year Existence, Buttugly (seriously, Buttugly!), and Vagivore. 7 p.m. (21+)

+ Or, if you’re more of a Deadhead, Tea Leaf Green looks to inspire fans of Dylan, Petty, and Garcia this evening at The Canopy. $13, 7:30 p.m. start.

+ Finally, you can get your dance on at Soma while enjoying ’90s tunes spun by DJ Mingram (10 p.m.), or go rasta with DJ Delayney at The Highdive (10 p.m.). It’s also Tango Night at the Cowboy Monkey, with free lessons at 7:30 p.m.
