Ruzica (Seka) Cuk, a Serbian immigrant and original co-owner, began baking and selling bread wholesale in C-U after deciding that American bread was not cutting it, and eventually opened Pekara Bakery & Bistro on Neil Street.

Now it’s at a different location, with different owners, but their bread game (now Central Illinois Bakehouse) is still strong, and they will have that delicious looking Serbian Pogaca Butter Bread for sale in honor of the day, as well as other celebratory specials such as a two for $20 sandwich deal.

Also remember that the CI Bakehouse croughnut, which can be found at Pekara, is in our March Food + Drink tournament. If you’ve ever tried it, you know why. There’s still time to get your Round of 32 votes in!
