Today is May 5th, and there are two burgers on special for today, both made with Maize Mexican Grill‘s pork. The food truck Smith Burger Co has a burger topped with Maize’s al pastor, and The Space restaurant has a burger today with patties made with Maize’s chorizo.

Smith Burger Co‘s special burger is called Hamburguesa Al Pastor ($13), and it had double beef smashburger patties and pepperjack cheese, topped with Maize’s al pastor with avocado salsa on a toasted bun, which the truck also made last year on May 5th. The Hamburguesa was awesome and spicy with delicious messy toppings. The patties were thicker, and the spicy cheese went perfectly with Maize’s saucy pork and creamy avocado. If you missed it for lunch today, you can catch this burger by the green truck at Riggs Beer Company from noon to 3 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, May 6th.

The new restaurant The Space also has a special Maize burger for May 5th: Smashy McMaizeFace ($16). The double patties were a blend of two-thirds house-ground brisket and one-third Maize chorizo, topped with queso chihuahua, a charred jalapeño, and pineapple crema. The meat on this burger tasted incredible with a beefy char and a chorizo finish, and the super thin edges of the burger patties crisped up like meat crackers. The chorizo did not overwhelm the burger but added great Mexican flavors. The pineapple crema was subtle, perhaps too subtle, but it was still a very good burger. The restaurant at 1 Main Street in Downtown Champaign will only serve the burger today until it’s sold out.
