Sonia Manzano is coming to C-U next week

Don’t recognize that name? Sonia Manzano is the actress who has portrayed Maria on Sesame Street, really forever. I mean she was Maria when I was a kid. A really long time ago. And yet she appears to not age at all. She will be making two appearances next week including:

April 11th at Ikenberry Commons Student Dining & Residential Programs Building from 7 to 9 p.m.

The event will be in SDRP Room 2025. It is free and open to University of Illinois students and members of the local community. A book signing will follow the talk.

For more than 40 years, Sonia Manzano inspired, educated, and delighted generations of children on the popular PBS series Sesame Street.

During her talk, she will discuss what it was like to be one of the only Latinas in media and broadcasting in the 1970’s and how representation has change during her years in the industry. She will talk about challenges that she had to face to achieve her level of success and the importance of having representation in a show like Sesame Street.

The event is hosted by the University Housing Latina/o Student Association in cooperation with the Honors Living-Learning Community, Campus Honors Program, Central Residential Funding Board, and WILL.

April 12th at the I-Hotel at 8 a.m., hosted by WILL
