As the new semester begins, Spurlock Museum has two new exhibits for you to explore, and both have opening events coming up.
On January 30th, from 1 to 3:30 p.m., there will be a public opening for Sewn in Memory: AIDS Quilt Panels from Central Illinois. I got a sneak peek of this exhibit a couple of months ago, and was fortunate to be able to speak with Jerry Carden, founding member of the Greater Community AIDS Project, about the quilts and the men who are memorialized. At the event, attendees can participate in a community art project as well as preview oral histories created by College of Media students.
On February 1st, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., community members are invited to the opening of Bodies in Crisis, which “explores how ancient cultures navigated bodily crisis through art.” There will be remarks by exhibit curator Professor Clara Bosak-Schroeder, Department of the Classics.
