The Latin American Ensemble at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is helping to diversify the School of Music‘s repertoire. Started in autumn of 2022, the ensemble plays a broad range of music from across Latin America and the Caribbean, including lesser-known styles that are not usually played by music schools. The group was founded by Guido Sánchez-Portuguez, a guitar professor in the School of Music, who wanted a group devoted to playing underrepresented types of Latin American music. The ensemble is open to music and non-music majors and currently has 11 students, most of whom are Latino. The group visited a local school and several suburban Chicago schools this year, as community engagement is a big part of their mission.

The ensemble will be playing their final performance of the year, Friday, April 21st at Smith Memorial Hall. Titled ¡Sway with me! Sueños, campos y anocheceres latinos, the performance is free and begins at 7:30pm.
