This weather calls for a shrub

Thank the universe that spring has decided to show up. Even though the allergens and wind make being outside just about unbearable, the sunshine has me thinking happy-ish thoughts. It’s the kind of weather that makes you want to treat yourself…so, I did.

I picked up some lunch from Hopscotch today, and was not disappointed. The quiche ($5) was cheesy pesto; the pesto added a nice freshness to the custardy eggs.

The most refreshing portion of my meal was the seasonal shrub made with blackberries and peppercorns ($5). In short, a shrub is a beverage made with vinegar. It’s vaguely “medicinal,” in the sense that there is some science to support the benefit of consuming apple cider vinegar. This shrub was refreshing and bright, without being too sweet or too peppery or too acerbic.

The shrub will be on the menu for a little while — it changes seasonally, and this one has just been added.
