Inside the Central American grocer Tienda Guatemala, there is a tiny bakery in the very back of the store that sells fresh bread for only $1.
Through all the packed shelves of pantry goods, a small case has bags of bread, and just beyond that, rolling sheet pan racks with trays and trays of fresh bread.
I asked the staff what the names of the different breads were, and she told me, “Bread.” I bought three breads based purely on the look, and they were all delicious.
This was my favorite one. This bread had the texture and flavor of brioche with a delicious slightly sweet taste, and I loved the way it looked.
This one was just as delicious as the first bread, but it had a super thin layer of sugar crusted on top. It had a great yeasty flavor and with a touch of sweetness.
This one was dusted with flour and had no sweetness. The bread was soft and fluffy, so I think it would make a good bun for a sandwich.
If you want to try some Guatemalan bread, Tienda Guatemala has delicious options, and the best part is that these pastries are only $1 each.
The small Urbana grocery is in the strip mall just beyond Silvercreek on Race Street in the same parking lot as Windy City and Wood N’ Hog. The hidden gem also sells pantry goods and other items including blankets, clothes, shoes, housewares, and candy.
