Urbana’s Market at the Square opening this Saturday

We’ll have some coverage of the Market coming your way at the end of the week, but here is some information about the upcoming opening of Urbana’s Market at the Square this weekend.

From the press release:

Urbana’s Market at the Square Opens New Season May 3rd

The City of Urbana’s Market at the Square is pleased to announce that its 2014 season will get underway this Saturday, May 3rd, at 7 a.m. The Market, which is located at the corner of Illinois and Vine Streets in Urbana, will be open 7 a.m.-12 p.m. every Saturday through November 1st.

The Market has been a mainstay of Urbana’s Saturday morning activities for 35 years and is home to over 150 different vendors selling their own fresh produce, plants and flowers; farm products such as meat, cheeses, eggs, honey, and fresh baked goods. There also is a wide variety of art & crafts for sale and numerous foods trucks producing a variety of menu items sure to satisfy any palate. New this year, the Market will showcase local vendors selling packaged beer, wine, and spirits — all which have been produced in Illinois.

“This is going to be a great season for Urbana’s Market at the Square,” commented Market Director, Natalie Kenny Marquez. “We’re excited to showcase six new produce vendors, two new food trucks, as well as provide a brand new permanent seating area for our patrons.”

Continuing for the second year, the Market will host an online interactive Market map and a product search function. Both of these features will help inform patrons and Market friends about what vendors will be in attendance at which Markets, what they are selling, product information, and how to contact vendors and community groups. Additionally, the Market will continue to offer weekly email updates titled Market Mail. These email updates will inform subscribers about what to expect at the Market each week, what is new, any programming that will take place, and more. All of these features may be accessed from the Market’s website at www.urbanaillinois.us/market.

Additionally, the Market’s free children’s programming (Sprouts at the Market) and free art workshops and performances coordinated by the Urbana Arts Program (Art at the Market) will be offered each month during the season. Regular visits by the Urbana Business Association, Urbana Free Library, and Community Blood Services of Illinois also are planned. For further programming information, please visit www.urbanaillinois.us/market.
