Until this summer, I had only ever eaten plain old red watermelon. This month, I bought Meyer Produce’s yellow watermelon at the farmers’ market, and my life changed. It tasted just like regular red watermelon but sweeter — and yellow.

Watermelon season doesn’t last forever; this pretty fruit will only be available through September. Buy yellow watermelon from Meyer Produce at both farmers’ markets. The melons range from $4 to $12 depending on size.
One thing that I learned the hard way: do not buy your watermelon first. Watermelons are heavy, friends, and carrying a watermelon around the market is only fun for a very short time. Buy your watermelon last.
