Smile Politely

The Overture: February 25–March 3

WHAT: Champaign-Urbana Singer-Songwriter Collective presents “Artists that Inspire”

WHERE: The Clark Bar (free)

WHEN: Tuesday, February 26th at 7 p.m.

Although the original show with Tomorrow is Already Here was postponed until a later date, there is still a lot to look forward to with this show on Tuesday. The Champaign-Urbana Singer-Songwriter Collective has a tribute show of sorts to all the music that inspires them as individual musicians at the Clark Bar, which will feature locals like John Coppess doing Johnny Cash, Margaret O’Brien as Joni Mitchel, amongst many, many more performing covers of their favorite artists.

WHAT: Jonathan Richman

WHERE: The Canopy Club ($15)

WHEN: Wednesday, February 27th at 8 p.m.

Ecclectic singer-songwriter Jonathan Richman makes his way through town as a part of the Pygmalion Music Festival Spring Show Series this week. This follows the first of the season with Murder by Death + Man Man over at the Highdive last week. Richman has an insane catalog that I could not even begin to go over in this short of a paragraph. He’s been around for nearly four decades now making music. Listen to Richman’s “I Was Dancing in a Lesbian Bar” below.

WHERE: The Canopy Club ($8)

WHEN: Thursday, February 28th at 9 p.m.

Cody Diekhoff, aka Chicago Farmer, makes his way over to Canopy later this week as he’s on a short trek around the Midwest with some late-winter dates. He’s supporting his new record, Backenforth, IL, which came out in January.

WHAT: Gas Up Yr. Hearse, Street Justice, Ashland, Ghost Key, Daukis

WHERE: Red Herring (donations)

WHEN: Friday, March 1st at 7 p.m.

As the days go by the number of days to donate to the Indigogo campaign to help Error Records fund their all-ages venue in Champaign lessens. They’ll have a stellar lineup to help them out with this show happening at Red Herring on Friday night. According to the Facebook event (linked in the title), all the money made at the door will go directly to the campaign, and they list all the things you can get in return for your donation according to the indigogo campaign. This show seems like a win-win in many, many ways. Stream Street Justice’s “Less Emotion, More Emoticons” below.

WHAT: Adam Larson Quintet

WHERE: The Iron Post ($?)

WHEN: Friday, March 1st at 9 p.m.

Some jazz music going down over in Urbana at the Iron Post this week. He hails from Normal, IL and plays with a quintet to perform some of his best stuff for the people of C-U. Not sure on the cost of this show yet, but this is a must-see this week for all you jazz heads out there.

WHAT: Horrible Things, Hospital Job, Witchfeet, Single Player

WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($7)

WHEN: Friday, March 1st at 8 p.m.

This punk show is looking to pack the upstairs of Mike ‘N Molly’s with locals Horrible Things headlining this one. Four bands on the bill increases the price a bit, but this is a good space for a punk show to be happening at this venue, compared to it being in the beer garden. Horrible Things are coming off a good year with the release of their solid Dumb Days LP in 2012. Stream “$20” below.

EDITOR’S PICK: THE DIRTY FEATHERS, BARROWE,
SWORDS & THE STRUGGLE, DJ BELLY

Cowboy Monkey ($5) — Saturday, March 2nd at 10 p.m.

Dubbed “A Party of Special Things To Do” (thank you, Captain Beefheart), as well as our next Smile Politely Show Series show for the month of March is a real hard hitter. We’ll have a closer look at what’s going on in Dirty Feathers’ camp later this week, but what we can tell you is their new album, which is tentatively called Our Totem is the Raven, is a lot to look forward to from these guys — especially coming off of their previous Midnight Snakes debut. We’re excited over here at SP. You can stream our favorite local track of 2012, “If Your Love Is A Drug (Then I’m Feeling Sick),” by the Dirty Feathers below.

Not only will the DFs be playing that in its entirety, they are joined by a stellar lineup to accompany them. Barrowe is the new outfit made up of Mark Wyman from Take Care, and Darwin Keup of Hank., so we’ll see what stuff they have in store. They’re putting together a 7” release with The Stars, They Beckon, but we’re not sure when that is set for release. We just know there are pictures. Swords & The Struggle and DJ Belly also support this one. Should be wild.
