Community Justice Task Force to report at tomorrow’s County Board meeting

Come to the County Board Meeting June 25
Hear the report of the Community Justice Task Force

We urge everyone to attend the presentation of the final report of the Community Justice Task Force, June 25 at 6:00 p.m. at the Brookens Administration Center, 1776, E. Washington, Urbana. You can read the 80-page report here. The task force has been working for more than a year developing alternatives to incarceration. On the 25th they will outline their recommendations to the County Board for:

  1. Reducing the need for jail space in the county
  2. Promoting successful re-entry for those returning from prison
  3. Decreasing the African-American population in the jail
  4. Re-allocating a large portion of the $4.5 million a year public safety sales tax to alternatives other than jail construction and more police. We need jobs and education to ensure the safety of the public.

The Task Force was formed as a result of public pressure to find ways to avoid spending millions on a new jail. They have done important work. Come out on the 25th and show your support for their efforts.
