C-U at Home and the City of Champaign Township have reached an agreement for the township to purchase the building that currently houses the homeless shelter. The township will turn it into a low barrier shelter, called Strides, where community members in need of emergency shelter can stay regardless of sobriety. C-U at Home requires people to be sober in order to utilize their services.
After funding for the low barrier shelter was approved, the township was initially looking at the location recently occupied by Champaign County Restore. Neighboring business owners were not happy about that possibility.
C-U at Home rejected the township’s initial offer to purchase their building, but have now agreed to sell it for just over $1 million.
It is set to open on December 12th, with 50 beds for men, and 10 beds for women.
This is an important step for better serving our vulnerable populations, especially as winter looms.
