It’s time to Examine Urbana

A view down a wide street at dusk, with buildings lining either side. Streetlights are on, and some of the buildings have string lights on their facades.

Back in 2021, the City of Urbana begin the work of developing a new comprehensive plan. The first stage, Imagine Urbana invited community members envision the sort of city they would like to see in five years, 10 years, and beyond. Our Editorial Board weighed in with our thoughts.

Now, after all of the input gathering, the city has moved on to the next phase, Examine Urbana. They have a new website for this phase, that organizes topics into “chapters.” From the press release:

Examine Urbana provides background information on topics important to the development of the City’s next Comprehensive Plan. Topics covered include Development and Taxes, Transportation, Arts and Culture, Housing, Energy and the Environment, and an assessment of the 2005 Comprehensive Plan.  The public is encouraged to scroll through the Examine Urbana website “chapters”, which are filled with facts, trends, and related stories about Urbana’s history and present day conditions.

During the next several Urbana City Council meetings, there will be a short presentation about one of the chapters:

April 10th: Purpose of Examine Urbana and Introduction
April 17th: Transportation
April 24th: Development and Taxes
May 1th: Arts and Culture
May 8th: Energy and the Environment
May 15th: Housing

Stay tuned for public opportunities, both in-person and online, to participate in community discussions about this next phase.
