The Rainbow Connection: October 5–11

WHAT: Same Sex Sunday Podcast

WHERE: Right here. And also here.

WHEN: Every Sunday

This week on SameSexSunday, Stuart Biegel stops by to discuss protecting LGBT youth from bullying and his book, the Right to be Out. We are also joined by Bernard Cherkasov, the CEO of Equality Illinois, as he launches their new “get out the vote” effort: VoteNakedIllinois.

Our weekly politics round table will have you questioning everything you know about this year’s election. First, Bilerico Editorial Advisory Board member Michael Crawford, Michigan Messenger reporter and Change.org contributor, Todd Heywood, Washington Blade reporter Chris Johnson, and National LGBT activist and leader, Meghan Stabler discussed what can be done about stemming the rising tide of tragic LGBT teen suicide. Next we tackled HIV criminalization law and alarming new numbers from the CDC about HIV infection rates.

Later we chat about what the LGBT agenda will look like under a GOP led Congress, the possibility of seeing same-sex bi-national couples reunited this year, and-now that Rahm Emanuel is stepping down-will the White House play nicer with the LGBT community under a new Chief of Staff?

Check it out.

The ten short digital stories included on Breaking the Silence are powerful tales of both the successes and failures of the foster care system for a group of former foster youth who identify as LGBTQ. Over the course of a four-day workshop, ten youth shared their stories and learned to edit them into moving heartfelt (and sometimes heartbreaking) personal videos. Through these youths’ thoughtful, honest, and insightful words and images, we hear directly not only about their experiences in care, but also what they think we, as advocates, can do to better support LGBTQ youth in the future.

WHAT: Same Sex Sunday Podcast

WHERE: Right here. And also here.

WHEN: Sunday, Oct. 9, 2010

Tripp Evans discusses his new book, Grant Wood: A Life, a richly detailed biography of the painter’s life in Iowa as a closeted gay man.

Metro Weekly‘s Chris Geidner filled in for Phil Reese as co-host of the Politics Round Table. Joining us this week were Bilerico Editorial Advisory Board Member Michael Crawford; President of the Greater Seattle Business Association (GSBA) and attorney at law, Mona Smith; GOProud Executive Director Jimmy LaSalvia; and John Johnson, SAGE‘s Director of Federal Relations.

The Same Sex Sunday Politics Round table had an engaging discussion and debate about Geidner’s cover story in Metro WeeklyThe State of Play,” where he interviewed 15 National Organization leaders about the state of the national LGBT movement. Later we talked about the Fred Phelps Supreme Court Case, the Make It Better Project, and how youth and aging issues collide, and more.

You definitely do not want to miss when conservative Jimmy LaSalvia and progressive Michael Crawford go head to head about the role of the Tea Party in the Republican party. Let’s just say if this show were live, there would have been some bleeps to appease the FCC.
