Our weekly politics round table will have you questioning everything you know about this year’s election. Professor Caron’s recent research focuses on the questions of community and republican universalism, and deals with issues such as the engagement of urban spaces by minoritized groups, the cultural and political uses of “the Republic,” representations of collective disasters (AIDS, the Holocaust), masculinity, and the concepts of neighborhood and family. His next book project is tentatively titled, Tact: HIV and the Politics of Re-embodiment.

What does it look like to combine sexuality with spirituality? Look UP is a discussion group for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, and queer individuals where we provide a safe environment to meet people, hang out, and discuss these two ideas and how they can and do coexist. Our goal is to bring together people from the LGBTQ community that have shared experiences, and allow them the freedom to explore these subjects in a respectful, peer-mediated setting.

WHAT: Friday Films: Breaking the Silence

The ten short digital stories included on Breaking the Silence are powerful tales of both the successes and failures of the foster care system for a group of former foster youth who identify as LGBTQ. Over the course of a four-day workshop, ten youth shared their stories and learned to edit them into moving heartfelt (and sometimes heartbreaking) personal videos. Through these youths’ thoughtful, honest, and insightful words and images, we hear directly not only about their experiences in care, but also what they think we, as advocates, can do to better support LGBTQ youth in the future.

Please join the UP Center in the “Walk, Run, and Roll” (pdf) event on Saturday, October 9th, to raise funds for GCAP, the Greater Community Aids Project.
Participants will walk one mile, or participate in a 5k run, or participate in a 5 mile bike ride to raise funds in order to provide HIV/AIDS emergency assistance and education programs to individuals in our community.
A minimum donation of $20 is required (cash or check made payable to Up Center), and you will receive a t-shirt.

Tripp Evans discusses his new book, Grant Wood: A Life, a richly detailed biography of the painter’s life in Iowa as a closeted gay man.
Metro Weekly‘s Chris Geidner filled in for Phil Reese as co-host of the Politics Round Table. Joining us this week were Bilerico Editorial Advisory Board Member Michael Crawford; President of the Greater Seattle Business Association (GSBA) and attorney at law, Mona Smith; GOProud Executive Director Jimmy LaSalvia; and John Johnson, SAGE‘s Director of Federal Relations.
The Same Sex Sunday Politics Round table had an engaging discussion and debate about Geidner’s cover story in Metro Weekly “The State of Play,” where he interviewed 15 National Organization leaders about the state of the national LGBT movement. Later we talked about the Fred Phelps Supreme Court Case, the Make It Better Project, and how youth and aging issues collide, and more.
You definitely do not want to miss when conservative Jimmy LaSalvia and progressive Michael Crawford go head to head about the role of the Tea Party in the Republican party. Let’s just say if this show were live, there would have been some bleeps to appease the FCC.

On the second Saturday of each month, GLAD has its social meeting and potluck dinner. The socials average between 25 and 30 people of all ages-both men and women.
