Smile Politely

Rep. Mary Miller’s first bill is a bathroom bill, because of course it is

Rep. Mary Miller (IL-15), who has already proven herself to be an awful person, has introduced her first bill in Congress. It’s called the Safety and Opportunity for Girls Act. From WAND, the bill would “establish sex-segregated bathrooms, locker rooms, sports teams and academic programs. It would clarify sex in Title IX to mean biological sex and not gender identity.”

I know I don’t need to tell you, our rational readers who recognize that trans girls are girls, and trans women are women, that this is a harmful measure introduced under the veil of “protecting girls.” Co-sponsors include Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (GA-14) and Rep. Lauren Boebert (CO-3), obviously.

This bullshit is tired, does nothing to improve the lives of people, and it is what the Republican Party is all about. They are not interested in helping people, they have no real policy platforms, they are only interested in perpetuating a culture war because that’s what keeps the base fired up and voting. They would rather argue about Dr. Seuss and Mr. Potato Head and bathrooms than deal with a country that is sick, divided, and devastated by their mishandling of a pandemic, unwillingness to acknowledge systemic racism, denial of equal rights for all, and economic policies that keep the rich rich and the poor poor.
