After passing out of committee last week, the full Danville City Council voted to pass an ordinance that would, according to WCIA’s reporting, “impose fines on anyone shipping or receiving abortion pills or supplies in the mail.” The council members were split, 7-7, and Mayor Rickey Williams Jr. cast the tiebreaking vote in favor of the measure.

The ordinance is meant to deter an abortion-providing clinic from opening in Danville.

The ACLU of Illinois is ready to challenge the ordinance, which Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul has indicated would violate state law.
