Clinics offer immunizations and physicals for students

Each year, students miss school due to non-compliance with medical requirements. Students must be compliant with physicals and immunizations by the October 15th deadline, but it can be a struggle for some parents to meet the requirement. To make access to services easier for parents, local health facilities have coordinated school physical clinics. The hope is that parents will take advantage of the services offered so that their children do not miss any school due to non-compliance.

Here are local events coming up that parents can take advantage of in the next several weeks:

In-School Flu Clinics

New this year are in-school flu clinics. A FluMist vaccination will be administered to students during the school day. The nasal spray has been administered in schools before by Champaign-Urbana Public Health District. The FluMist requires less effort on the part of the administering health facility, as well as on the part of the student, as it is a nasal spray and not a shot. These clinics also add accessibility and cost-efficiency to a preventative service that can also have a positive impact on school attendance. Provena Covenant Medical Center and Carle have both donated to make these clinics possible. These clinics will take place in late September and early October. Currently there are five schools confirmed to participate in the flu clinics, with a possibility of two more being added to that list.

There will also be a family/community flu clinic at Champaign-Urbana Public Health District as a follow up to the in-school flu clinics. The event is open to the public. Unit 4 parents are encouraged to attend.
