WHAT: Men’s Support / Social Group

The UP Center is proud to announce that we will be staring an adult men’s social and support group. This group will meet on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month from 7:00–8:30 p.m. starting May 3, 2011.
On the first Tuesday of the month, the group will meet in a social manner for casual discussion, games, and more. On the third Tuesday of each month, the group will meet in a peer support setting where we will have focused discussions on topics such as the coming out process, developing friendships within the community, dating, and more.
This group is geared towards adult men ages 18 and up.

WHAT: (Dis)Locating Queer: A Graduate Conference at the University of Illinois, Urbana‐Champaign

(Dis)locating Queer will be comprised of presentations that queer the analysis of race, region, and sexual diaspora, and which unsettle racial, regional, and diasporic assumptions within queer studies.
Our contributors, from a wide range of disciplines and interdisciplinary fields, investigate these intersecting lines of inquiry, asking what queer does rather than what “queer” is.

WHAT: Biblical Self-Defense for LGBTQ People

We, at Community United Church of Christ, are excited about the passing of the Civil Union Law in Illinois. Unfortunately, we know that not all people claiming to be Christians will join us in the celebration. But, we want you to know that you are not alone, and we’d like to give you some tools for protecting yourself when people wield the bible against you as a weapon.
Join us for CUCC’s Biblical Self-Defense Workshop. Rev. Leah Robberts-Mosser, pastor of Community UCC of Champaign, will lead you through the real meaning behind those verses people wield against gay folks. You’ll be armed with Biblical proof that, in fact, God loves you and made you I God’s own image. Don’t miss this life-changing workshop.

WHAT: Queer the Quad
WHERE: University of Illinois Quad (or anywhere on campus)

Act “gay” in this hour. Whether you are queer or not, hold hands, put your arm around, and/or flirt with members of the same sex or people who are genderqueer during lunch time.
Why are we doing this? Some students are shy and/or worried about showing affection for their significant other. One of these students came up to Colors of Pride and said that she’s scared and nervous to hold her girlfriend’s hand on campus because she never sees any other gay couples do it.
Also, we will be selling shirts that have pictures of couples (one is two men, the other is two women, and the third is a man with a woman) holding hands. It’s basically this design but with spray paint. We’ll be selling those for $3–4 (depending on cost of the supplies … we’re not looking for a profit).

Talk it UP is a peer-run LGBTQ support group for middle and high-school youth. LGBTQ youth can expect an atmosphere of acceptance, support, and confidentiality while meeting other LGBTQ youth. The group is co-facilitated by two UP Center board members (one teacher, one social worker); however the group is led by the youth participants.
Snacks are provided.
