Weekender: January 8-10

FRIDAY, January 8th

Visit Barrelhouse 34, all weekend, open hours

The newest bar in Downtown Champaign officially opened on Thursday, so go check it out at some point this weekend. They have tons of craft beer and cocktails to offer up, so test out the waters for yourself. It might not be warm enough to test out the rooftop patio, but soon enough that will be available. (PS)

Go to a comedy showIron Post, Urbana, 9-11 p.m., $6

Do you enjoy… laughter? How about Urbana? The Iron Post? Beer? Yeah — I thought so. Head out to the Post tonight for all of the above. This isn’t the typical CU Comedy Club troop, no this is a different group. Expect to see new faces like Xavier Lamont, Kyle Scanlan, Tyler Snodgrass and Andrew Voris perform. Check out the Facebook event page for more information. (SL)

DJ John Hoeffleur’s Final All-Night Set, Mike N Molly’s, 10 p.m., $1 Cover, 19+

One of C-U’s staples is late-night DJ John Hoeffleur at Mike N Molly’s. This Friday, we bid farewell to John via his final all-night DJ set before he moves away from our fair city. (BH)

Go ballroom dancing, 1406 Regency Drive West, Savoy, $10

Dancing is a fantastic skill to learn and you can do so tonight at the Regent. For just $10 you’ll get the opportunity to recieve some instruction and practice your moves. These skills will come in handy, along side your well polished whip and nay-nay, at weddings and holidays. So grab your partner and head out with some comfortalbe shoes to get your dance on! SATURDAY, January 9th

Middle Market, Lincoln Square Mall, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Middle Market debuts this Saturday. Take the opportunity to get out of the house, “randomly” run into friends and foes, pick up some local goods (how’s your honey supply?), and maybe even go home with some local produce. (JH)

Penny Horses, Waterfowl, Loose Cobra (Tolono), 9 p.m.

Make your way out to Tolono for a couple of cold ones and check out Penny Horses and Waterfowl, a duo of locals that are worth your viewing attention. Penny Horses landed on our Top Albums list of 2015, and Waterfowl issued a solid release of their own as well. Loose Cobra is a cozy room, so make yourself comfortable and enjoy. (PS)

SUNDAY, January 10th

Buy tickets for the Orpheum Winter Wine Gala Tasting presented by Art Mart, all weekend, $25 per person, or $35 per person for VIP

The Orpheum Winter Wine Gala Tasting is at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, January 29th from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.; proceeds benefit the Orpheum Children’s Science Museum. You’ll have an opportunity to sample and buy a bunch of wine, and bid on unique auction items. Get your tickets here. Photo by Jessica Hammie (JH)

Illinois Fighting Illini Basketball vs. Purdue, State Farm Center, 5 p.m., price varies

Sure, we’re gonna lose. Purdue’s a ranked team, and at one point this year was in the top 10. But maybe we won’t lose, and that right there is enough reason to make the trek out to State Farm Center on Sunday. Because it’s Sunday, and what else are you doing other than watching sports, anyways? (BH)
