Weekender: June 1–3

Friday, June 1

SP Radio Happy Hour Show at Mike n’ Molly’s Beer Garden, 5:30–6:30 p.m.

More info in our weekly splog plost, but I thought I’d say something here as well. We’re going to be revisiting those BEST lists that we published a couple of weeks ago. Plus, Mayor Don Gerard is singing about storm sewer fees, Robert Hirschfeld is probably not talking about bongs, and we’re even ripping off Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me at the end. Mostly it’s just a good excuse to drink some booze. (JAS)

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel at The Art Theater, Friday, 5:00 & 7:30 p.m. | Saturday, Noon, 2:30, 5:00, 7:30 p.m. | Sunday, 4:00, 6:30 p.m.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is the story of seven British retirees who emigrate to India to live in a hotel that’s advertised as a “low-cost answer to their retirement dreams.” I have not seen this film yet, but I trust Roger Ebert’s opinion (for the most part). Also, unlike other theaters in town, The Art is showing this film from a 35mm print. (TN)

Sierra Leone’s Refugee Allstars, Rhythm Manding at The Highdive, 7:30 p.m., $16–$18

Check out these dudes making a bunch of noise at the Highdive on Friday night. This oughta be a pretty interesting show — probably one unlike anything you’ve really seen before. Interesting band to book, but pretty cool nonetheless. Price point is a bit steep, but if you’re looking for a show to go to, might as well make it unique. (PS)

Saturday, June 2

Taste the farm at Big Grove Tavern, 11 a.m.–3 p.m. and 4:30–11 p.m.

If you haven’t given this place a shot already you should. Our resident foodie and all-around gifted taster of all things food and drink, Susanna, had some pretty great things to say about this place in a recent review, so go and give this place a try for your weekend date night. They may not be the cheapest dinner spot, and they may not be the first earth-friendly restaurant, ahem, sorry, tavern, in town, but they are doing a damn great job putting together some delicious dishes. This is their first official weekend open so come early for a drink or a fancy snack and see what this new downtown staple is all about. (CC)

Occupy street corner protest, Main & Neil, Champaign IL, 2:00–4:00 p.m.

Occupy C-U is still at it, fighting the Good Fight, and this week they’re being joined by AWARE. (TN)

Rocky Votolato, CALLmeKAT at Mike ‘N Molly’s, 9 p.m., $13

Rocky Votolato is taking his new record Television of Saints out on the road for the next few weeks after its release in early April. He’ll be in Indy the night before and St. Louis the night after, so this is your shot to see him before he’s a few hundred miles away. Hopefully the weather cooperates and the beer garden works out for this one. (PS)

Lesbian Attack, Kings on Parade at Emerald City Lounge, 10:30 p.m.–2:00 a.m.

The so very Awesome Amy Myers is bringing the Kings back for another performance at Emerald City. If you’re wondering what Drag King shows are like, check out SP’s coverage of the last time the Kings in America performed.

From what I can tell, VIP seating is still available, and it’s the best way to enjoy these shows:

  • (2) Large White Leather Sofas, seating for 5 ($40, includes cover)
  • (4) 4-Top tables along the runway ($30, includes cover)
  • (2) Black Leather Sofas, seating for 4 ($30, includes cover)
  • (6) 3-Top tables on the main floor ($20, includes cover)

Sunday, June 3

FREE, free, all day.

It’s the first of the month. The kids are gone. The leases are up. The yard sales are over (for now). If there is anything that I have learned from many years in college towns, it’s how to find a deal, and the first week of June is usually the best time to stumble upon that miraculous piece of furniture with a tantalizing FREE sign sitting next to it on your Sunday morning stroll. That desperate couple flinging IKEA furniture into the back of a minivan had no more room for the deco side-table that belonged to her uncle when he was in college, so now it’s yours if you want it. And hey, that vacuum might work after a new belt and an exorcism. So go for it. What’s the worst that can happen? Spiders could hatch out of it, sure. But more than likely it will end up on your driveway with a FREE sign on it this time next year and there is nothing wrong with that. Circles and life and stuff. Enjoy your new vacuum. (CC)
