Try to get Neutral Milk Hotel tickets, The Canopy Club and/or Exile on Main Street, $37 (if you’re lucky), read on for time information.
So as you should know already, Neutral Milk Hotel is performing in C-U at the Canopy Club in October. This is a pretty huge deal. If you didn’t know they were playing already, you probably won’t find this entry very helpful.
Anyway, those of you reading this between the hours of 12:01 a.m. and a few hours before noon, this might help you. If you didn’t see our SPlog from earlier this week, there will be a limited run of tickets available (although I’m not certain how many pairs they will have available — FYI) to locals for the show available at the Canopy Club and Exile on Main Street. Honestly, I have no idea if there will be a line or not, but I would imagine there will be. Just a gut feeling here. If you’re lucky enough to get tickets, this will certainly make your weekend. Certainly you can try to get them online, starting at noon CST as well, but so will everyone else around here, so this is a decent option to have.
Remember, tickets are will call ONLY and these ticket locations will only take CASH. So be prepared if you’re invested in getting tickets.

Eat a burger, because it’s the end of the week, and you made it, anywhere, but in this case, Meatheads
Woosh, I’ve been talkin’ burgers a lot lately. I think there’s a pretty damned good reason for it, too: I haven’t eaten but one in the past five weeks. That’s a long burger drought. As a result, I’m living vicariously through those who have.
Meatheads is a real source of contention amongst my friends. But I fall in the YAY side for sure. Every time I’ve been in, I’ve loved it. Yes, it’s a small chain, but how does that matter, any more, in terms of quality? I don’t think it does.
Anyhow, it’s the end of the week, and if you worked hard and feel good about the week you’ve had, you deserve a burger.
If you are a veg, try this:
- Buy (1) pineapple.
- Take the rind off of it with a big knife.
- Slice it horizontally in one-inch, thick slices.
- Take out the core, but only like a small cm or so? Most of that is good.
- Grill it, HOT. Like, 550 plus, outdoors, preferably with a beer.
- Flip it once and add a couple of thin slices of sharp cheddar. SUPER sharp.
- Immediately after, take that King’s Hawaiian Burger Bun (they sell them, they rule) and brush a little olive oil on it. Grill it. But watch it. Don’t let it burn!
- After the cheese is truly melted through, take it off and let it rest for 3–5 mins.
- Take the bun off too, before it burns!
- Grab any sort of leafy green, and put it on the bottom bun, after you’ve slathered it with a spicy condiment. Doesn’t matter. You choose. I’d do a lemon juice / mayo / herb / aioli thingy, but you can use ketchup for all I care. Your call. And if you eat ketchup on any sandwich, hey, you have to wake up with yourself in the morning.
- Put the sandwich together. That’s as good as any “burger” I’ve ever had.

Those Who Teach, CAN, Indi Go, 6–9 p.m., FREE
This is the 3rd annual exhibition of Champaign Unit 4 Art Teachers’ personal works at indi go Artist Co-Op Gallery. Seventeen art teachers will have works in a variety of media on display from May 10–18. Friday’s family-friendly public reception will feature live music by Los Guapos (featuring Dr. Howard’s art teacher, Michael McLoughlin), hors d’oeuvres and beverages. Indi Go Gallery is located at 9 E. University, downtown Champaign — south of the City Building, between CV Lloyd’s and the Brass Rail. Jarrel Young Mixtape Release, Mike ‘N Molly’s, 9:00 p.m., $7
Jarrel Young, an Urbana-Champaign native, will be releasing his mixtape, Chemical Imbalance Vol. 1, this Friday in the Mike ‘N Molly’s beer garden. Special guest Lil Zi will make his way down from Chicago to perform, and local emcees I2K, Jonah, and JEFFdaMC will be on hand. Nineteen and over only. (MG)

SATURDAY, MAY 11
Free Workshops and Music, Urbana’s Market at the Square, Free
The City of Urbana Public Arts Program will hold the first of its series of free monthly art activities at Urbana’s Market at the Square on Saturday, May 11. Try your hand at printmaking with artist Lisa Kesler from 8:00 a.m.–12 noon, and listen to bossa nova, samba, and popular Brazilian music from Desafinado from 9:30–11:30 a.m. Both events are free, open to all ages, and require no registration to participate. The workshop and performance will be held on Walnut Street near the City of Urbana tent at the northwest entrance to the Market at the Square, located in historic downtown Urbana on Illinois and Vine. Grab a beer at Triptych Brewing, whenever, cost varies
It’s Mother’s Day this weekend and the in-laws are visiting. You’re stuck entertaining until your wife returns, so what do you do? Give them alcohol. Parents love the fact that they can see where the beer is made and talk to the head brewer. Buy a growler to send home with dad, and even he gets something out of this whole “attention to mom” thing. Triptych has started brewing special one-off “snowflake” beers that are each unique and exclusively available during their brief life. This weekend’s offering is Citrus Wheat, “an American Wheat beer dry hopped with orange and lemon zest.” It sounds like a perfectly refreshing Saturday afternoon. (JS)
Don’t Ask, Strawberry Fields, 5–7 p.m., free
Local folk band Don’t Ask makes one of their regular appearances at Strawberry Fields this Saturday evening. Grocery shopping is never on the top of fun things to do, but the sounds of Don’t Ask, along with a great selection of pastries and tasty coffee, make it all a pretty manageable experience. Shahman, Greys, Kowabunga Kid, Marathon, Error Records, 7:30 p.m., $5
This band Shahman from Canada is pretty cool. They have a pretty dynamic mix of sounds going on here, ranging from low-key post-rock songs to pretty rugged noise rock outbursts. One of the cooler sounding bands that I’ve seen booked at Error Records since they opened back up. Maybe stop by to see them perform? If not, you can see the other bands that are listed, including stellar locals Marathon and Kowabunga Kid. (PS)

- If your mom loves you, but you don’t love her, expect to feel conflicted at best.
- If you miss your mom, you’re not alone and I’m so sorry.
- If you never had a mom, but your dad is awesome, buy him some flowers.
