Weekender: September 11-13

FRIDAY, September 11th

Field Day, Student Sustainability Farm, Lincoln & Windsor in Urbana, 3-6 p.m., free

Come on out to the Student Sustainability Farm for an open house Friday afternoon. Included will be tours of the U of I Community Garden plots, paper making demos, and most importantly, free food! What more reason do you need to kick off your weekend with an afternoon outside? (BH)

ELLNORA: The Guitar Festival, Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, all weekend, prices vary

A crown jewel of the Champaign-Urbana community is happening: ELLNORA at Krannert. If you haven’t done so, please do yourself a favor and check out a show or five throughout the weekend. Many of them are free, and you can check out the full schedule here. Great music, amazing spaces, and happy people. There you have it, folks. (PS)

Solid Attitude, Waveless, Bullnettle, Downer’s Groove, Dingbat Dungeon, 7 p.m., $5

Solid Attitude and Waveless are on tour from Minneapolis. Their stop in C-U provides us with a chance to catch some of the grooviest and most unique forms of midwestern punk right here in a local basement. (MR)

SATURDAY, September 12th

Diavola, Pizzeria Antica, 10 E Chester Street, Champaign, 11 a.m. to sold out (or 9 p.m.), $15

This might be my new favorite pizza in town. It’s delicious. A little spice, a little cheese, lots of delicious. Order one for yourself, because you’re not going to want to share. Photo by Jessica Hammie. (JH)

Pre-game for PygLit Fest, anytime, anywhere, FREE from your library.

There are a ton of great authors about to invade this town and offer you a sample of their writing for free at Pygmalion Literature Fest. Take a day to relax and prepare by getting familiar with their works, all of which are available between our two town libraries. My current favorites are Michael Czyzniejewski and Jennine Capo Crucet. Click on either link with your library card handy to have the titles held for you. (RK)

Go see Dead Man, The Art Theater Co-op, 10p.m.

The plot of this black and white Jim Jarmusch film is strange, but that’s besides the point. What you mostly need to know is that it stars Johnny Depp, has an appeance by Iggy Pop and is scored by NEIL FUCKING YOUNG. (MR)

SUNDAY, September 13th

Garlic Planting Class, Common Ground Food Co-op, 2-3 p.m., $7 owner/$12 non-owner

Learn how and when to plant garlic, because it’s super delicious and good for you. And how cool would it be to say to your friends, “Oh, this garlic? Yeah, I grew it.” Sign up for the class here. (JH)
