Market Watch: summer solstice

The summer solstice is happening in the wee hours of Sunday, June 21, which means that S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y Night is the perfect time to cook up a Midsummer Night’s feast for you and all your friends. The Market can supply most of your feasty needs, including meats for grilling, veggies for grilling and salads, cheese for those hors d’oeuvres, bread, and fruits to add to desserts. Seriously, you can make your Solstice feast almost entirely from local produce, and if you do, take photos and SPlog it!

At the Market this week:

  • Asparagus
  • Arugula
  • Basil
  • Beets
  • Blueberries
  • Bok choy
  • Cabbage
  • Chard
  • Cilantro
  • Cucumbers
  • Green beans
  • Green garlic
  • Green onions
  • Kale
  • Kohlrabi
  • Leeks
  • Lettuce
  • PEACHES (not very many, come early)
  • Peas
  • Potatoes
  • Radishes
  • Salad mix
  • Spinach
  • Sprouts
  • Strawberries
  • Tomatoes
  • Turnips
  • Zucchini

This weekend, U-Cycle is in the house to talk to everyone about recycling, compost, and all their groovy programs (including battery recycling: the rules have changed, by the way), and Urbana Fire rescue will be out with one of their gorgeous deep red trucks, trying to “fill the boot” for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

See you out there!
