Market Watch: Super scary corporate food not available

Just a reminder to all you folks who come into the Market wondering what happened to that last row: our entire operation is now “small” enough to fit in four rows instead of five. The Market is still going strong still an impressive variety of vendors hanging on until they can move inside for the Urbana Business Association’s Holiday Market, which starts November 14. While the Markets are different, they share many of the same vendors, including farmers. For more information, click on the link above or call 344–3872.

This week’s food:

apples, fennel, cilantro, celeriac, leeks, onions, heirloom potatoes, tomatoes, fresh carrots, chard, cabbages, lettuces and salad mixes, spinach, green onions, green beans, okra, eggplant, hot & sweet peppers, broccoli, kohlrabi, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, squashes (including pumpkins) — also, locally-raised meat and eggs, award-winning goat cheese, honey, and much more.

Not much has changed with what’s available — with the weather in a damp and chilly holding pattern, the produce list is holding steady, but a few things seem to be missing. A couple of weeks ago, a reader asked about Brussels sprouts — we asked around and discovered that they’re usually available by now, but the cool weather and fading daylight has impeded their growth. If you don’t see them outside at the Market through November 7, check inside at the Holiday Market on November 14. Fresh and local Brussels sprouts are a delicacy and not to be missed, but if Mother Nature’s not feeling so benevolent… you might have to wait a week or two.

Market at the Scare is ON for this weekend. Since the Market falls on an actual Halloween this year, what better excuse to get the costume out for a test run? We’ll offer up some tasty treats and apple cider at the City tent starting at 9 and we’ll keep giving them away while supplies last. There may even be trick-or-treating and photo ops. Kids and grownups of all ages welcome!

See you out there…
