Market Watch: Time to get your corn on!

Yes, it’s true — the season’s first sweet corn will be available in limited quantities at the Market this Saturday. There won’t be much — weather and varmints have really put the whammy on the local growing season in general — so you’ll have to come early and prowl rows 1 and 4. There’ll be plenty more corn in the coming weeks, but there’s something about those first ears, especially when they’re on the grill…

Speaking of weather, let’s talk about rain for a second. We need to remind all Farmers’ Marketeers that Market at the Square is kinda like the Postal Service — it’s open rain or shine, hot or cold, humid or perfect. While many arts/craft vendors will opt out of the Market on a rainy day (surely you’ve seen what water does to soap!), the produce vendors are always there. Grab your funkiest umbrella and come out — inspired by Kathy Wicks from the Urbana Free Library (they braved the elements last Saturday, as you’ll see), any time it rains I’ll be taking photos of awesome rain fashion — umbrellas, slickers, galoshes, etc. Show us your stuff, and show some local farmers some love at the same time

THIS WEEK’S PRODUCE: arugula, basil, beets, blackberries, blueberries, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cilantro, cucumbers, field greens, garlic scapes, green beans, green onions, kale, kohlrabi, leaf lettuce, leeks, nectarines, onions, parsley, peaches, potatoes, raspberries, spinach, sugar snap and other peas, summer squash, SWEET CORN, swiss chard, tomatoes, turnips, zucchini and probably even more stuff

Art at the Market: The Urbana Public Arts Program’s Art at the Market is back for another installment, this time with local artist Roberta Bennett. Come join Roberta for this free, all-ages watercolor workshop between 8 and noon on Saturday; the Art tent will be adjacent to the City’s tent at the NW entrance to the Market. Questions? Contact Anna at [email protected] or 384-2311.

Second Saturday: The Urbana Business Association will be sponsoring Second Saturday, this weekend in Downtown Urbana. This event, which showcases downto3wn merchants and other vendors, runs from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Go check it out after the Market. Call Susan at 344-3872 or email [email protected] with questions.

Pssst: If you like getting bagels from the bagel guy in Row 4, stock up this weekend — he’ll be on vacation for the 7/18 and 7/25 Markets.

See you out there!
