The Overture: April 19 – 25

WHAT: Jill Andrews, Kayla Brown & the Dulcet Kin

WHEN: Tuesday, April 20, 8:30 p.m.

WHERE: Cowboy Monkey ($7)

Jill Andrews has been getting a lot of love on the blogosphere. And at first you might not undersand why. By all outward appearances, she should just sound like thousands of other singer-songwriters. But with her heartbreaking voice and affecting songwriting, she’s impossible to forget.

WHAT: Clipse and Motion Potion

WHEN: Wednesday, April 21 at 6:00 p.m.

WHERE: Station 211 (free)

We don’t get too many national touring hip hop acts through these parts, so the fact that we get Clipse is pretty amazing. A rap group with the rare combination of critical acclaim and mainstream appeal, this one should be great. And you get jam DJ Motion Potion too. Please enjoy responsibly — you have class/work the next day.

WHAT: Giant Cloud, My Dear Alan Andrews, Kilroy et al.

WHEN: Friday, April 23 at 10:00 p.m.

WHERE: Mike n’ Molly’s

Giant Cloud is a free lovin’ band from New Orleans that should interest fans of the Grizzly Bear and all those other baroquey bands that blew up two years ago. Their songs manage to be breezy and complex at the same time. My Dear Alan Andrews and Kilroy et al. round out a pretty well-conceived night of music.

WHAT: So Many Dynamos, Vanattica, Seventeen Sisters, The Lost Years, Year of the Bobcat, Seldan, Shark Bandit, Sun Stereo, Benny Wil

WHEN: Saturday, April 24 at 3:00 p.m.

WHERE: Parkland College (free)

St. Louis band So Many Dynamos headline a rock n’ roll Earth Day celebration. Apparently, there’s a battle of the bands competition going on, which I think will involve all the bands listed above that aren’t So Many Dynamos. So enjoy the competition. My money’s on whoever plays an acoustic set, what with it being Earth Day and all.

WHAT: The Used, Chiodos, New Medicine

WHEN: Saturday, April 24 at 8:00 p.m.

WHERE: Canopy Club ($25, adv)

I’m not going to pretend to know a lot about this band. They are metal meets pop punk, they have sold a lot of albums and I’m guessing that nearly ten years into their careers, they have gotten pretty good at putting on a rocking show. So if you are into this kind of thing, you probably already know about it. But if you didn’t, then here you go.

NEW ADDITIONS
If you liked what you saw here last Friday, you should probably check again this Friday. And if you want some clues, don’t ask me. The other music editor is the one who knows about every show three weeks before the bands do. All I know is that there won’t be any Archers of Loaf reunion show this year. Boo!
