The Overture: February 18–24

EDITOR’S PICK: MURDER BY DEATH, MAN MAN, DAMION SUOMI
The Highdive ($15) — Tuesday, February 19th at 8 p.m.

typically don’t feature shows this early in the week as the highlight of the week in music in C-U, but this is a no brainer pick. This double-headliner of sorts features indie rockers Murder By Death and experimental crew Man Man as a part of the Pygmalion Music Festival Spring Show Series. Both bands have played the festival in the past, with Man Man performing way back in 2006 and Murder by Death a bit more recently in 2008.

For the price of tickets, this is a pretty good deal considering you’re getting two bands that could headline their own shows and probably charge just as much for the tickets. Murder by Death stopped through last year for one of these Spring Show Series shows, which you can check out here. Our own Joel Gillespie got a chance to interview both bands, with last week’s Murder by Death interview here and you can look forward to his interview with Man Man Tuesday morning. Stream Murder by Death’s “Lost River” below.

WHAT: Miranda Lambert, Dierks Bentley, Lee Brice

WHERE: Assembly Hall ($25-$50)

WHEN: Friday, February 22nd at 7:30 p.m.

Two big time country acts coming through to fill Assembly Hall later this week in Miranda Lambert and Dierks Bentley. Not exactly your month to see a country music show where you can’t tailgate or anything like that, but surely a ton of diehards will be at this one. Not exactly my cup of tea, but hey, pretty huge acts warrent at least some attention. Stream Lambert’s “Over You” below.

WHERE: The Highdive ($8)

WHEN: Friday, February 22nd at 8 p.m.

Tim Kinsella is no stranger to C-U having played here many, many times with many different bands. This time around, he’s taking his Joan of Arc project and doing things solo at The Highdive this week. His last record came out in 2011 entitled Life LIke. Kinsella has a ton of material out under this moniker worth checking out before going to this show. You can stream “Post-Coitus Rock” off of A Portable Model Of… below. Locals Anna Karenina/Anna Karina open things up for Kinsella.

WHAT: Hi Ho Buffalo, Decadents, Bone, Jugs and Harmony

WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($5)

WHEN: Friday, February 22nd at 8 p.m.

I’m not as familiar with this outfit, Hi Ho Buffalo, but they’re playing at Mike ‘N Molly’s this week. You can hear bits and pieces of some of their songs over at their Myspace page in a 5 minute compliation to get an idea of what they sound like. Kind of has a country twang / rockabilly sound going for it.

WHAT: That’s No Moon, Hidden Hospitals, Abnormous

WHERE: Cowboy Monkey (45)

WHEN: Friday, February 22nd at 9:30 p.m.

A couple of locals sandwich Chicago’s Hidden Hospitals this weekend at Cowboy Monkey. That’s No Moon has seemed pretty quiet lately, playing a few shows here and there, but no word of whether or not they’re planning on putting out new material in 2013 to follow up their pretty solid self-titled debut from a few years ago. Should be interesting to see what they’ve got going on. Stream That’s No Moon’s “Megaman” below.

WHAT: ###, Footwork, DJ Belly, The Interns, Epilep[c]

WHERE: Cowboy Monkey ($3 after 11 p.m.)

WHEN: Saturday, February 23rd at 9 p.m.

Another solid Certified Dope shows is lined up to take place this weekend. ### (pronounced Pound Pound Pound) headlines this one, which also features some locals mixed in with DJ Belly, The Interns and Epilep[c]. You can stream ###’s “The Down Low” down, well, below.

WHAT: Gloria Roubal & Paul Sabuco, Dawna Nelson, Evil Tents, Steakman, Susie & The Shy Guys, Acme Principle

WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s

WHEN: Saturday, February 23rd at 8:30 p.m.

This show is lined up for this Saturday at Mike ‘N Molly’s as a benefit for Catsnap, an area trap spay / neuter and adoption program  for cats. The bill features a handful of singer-songwriters and some full bands, including Evil Tents and The Acme Principle. Interesting lineup for a good cause to say the least. You can stream Evil Tent’s “John Brown’s Body” below.
