This Polyvinyl double-header show is an evening of synthy indie pop, including the ethereal sounds of Portland’s synth pop group STRFKR, and the thoughtful synth of the C-U area’s own Erin Fein, a.k.a. Psychic Twin. Welcome her back by enjoying these shimmering melodies on Wednesday.

WHEN: Wednesday, Feb. 8th at 8 p.m.

Dance, funk, and electronica group Cherub returns to C-U as part of their current tour, which is titled “Your Girlfriend Already Bought Tickets Tour.” That’s as great of an indication for what to expect from this show as any. Cherub’s swagger will be accompanied by fellow electronica band The Floozies.

Pop-punk band Single Player just announced the release date of their latest album and a new single from it. Hear their new stuff at this rock show, which also features We The Animals, Lime Forest, and more from newcomers The Dry Look.

WHERE: The Iron Post ($10 for Friday / $20 for Saturday, or $20 in advance for both days)

WHEN: Friday, Feb. 10th at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 11th at 6 p.m.

This inaugural Folk & Roots Winter Weekend, sponsored in part by the C-U Folk and Roots Festival collective, will feature two days of local and touring folk, bluegrass, and Americana acts sure to satisfy your rootsy cravings. Euriah’s Eric Stanley recently had a birthday, and Blips and Chitz is celebrating with a good ol’ punk-n-emo time. Winter Classic and Meet Me in Montauk are coming through and will join locals Euriah and pop-punk band Old Fox Road for a birthday done right.

The Bach’s Lunch Concerts are returning with this first free show of the year. Grab some lunch (or call ahead and have them provide you one for a small cost) and spend your hour listening to fun folk music.

WHAT: The Great Cover Up 26 “Afterglow”

Four bands who performed at this year’s GCU are reprising their roles as each band, as well as adding on to their respective sets. This show is a benefit for Girls Rock! C-U, and a sure thing for a good time. You can never get enough of The Great Cover Up.

WHAT: Shooter Jennings & Waymore’s Outlaws

WHERE: City Center (tickets start at $18)

WHEN: Saturday, Feb. 11th at 7 p.m.

Shooter Jennings comes from a famous family of country music, and he’s done a great job of following in those footsteps. He’s also established his own unique rugged and scrappy musical personality. Enjoy some classic country with a twist with this show.

The folks in charge of Hogchute Opry bring you another installment of their Offchute Opry show series with this event. Folk and country artist Cara Louise and her band are visiting C-U to play with local regulars Penny Horses and Neoga Blacksmith, making for another solid night of folk music in the area.

WHAT: Urbana Pops Orchestra Recital

WHERE: Urbana Free Library (free)

WHEN: Sunday, Feb. 12th at 2 p.m.

This show marks the start of the Urbana Pops free recital series. The first session will feature violinist Tamra Gingold to kick things off.

WHAT: Conscious House Concert No. 9

WHERE: Ananda Liina Center ($5 suggested donation)

WHEN: Saturday, Feb. 11th at 8 p.m.

The ninth session of Conscious House Concert will feature The Coneflowers with MJ Walker, an acoustic all-women’s ensemble who pull from genres across the spectrum and come together to play a little of everything, often in four-part harmony. This week, your $5 donation will go to support CU At Home, who help the homeless people of Champaign-Urbana.

WHAT: Bluegrass & Brunch

WHERE: Watson’s Shack & Rail (admission is free)

WHEN: Sunday, Feb. 12th from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Sunday will be the first winter brunch event at Watson’s, and it’ll include a special menu prepared just for the session. Classics will also be available, and there will be a cocktail bar, which I’m sure will include the best bloodies & mimosas. Add some live bluegrass tunes from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. and you’ve got a mid-morning event that’s sure to kick that hangover to the curb.
