The Overture: June 24–30

WHAT: Chrome Pony, Thin Gin, Kangaroo, Big Storm, Mille Nomi

WHERE: Error Records ($5)

WHEN: Monday, June 24th at 7 p.m.

A mixture of rock bands set to take the stage at Error on an early-week show over there. Dance rock crew Chrome Pony lead the way with a handful of others, including a couple of locals in Thin Gin and Mille Nomi. Chicago’s Kangaroo and Springfield’s Big Storm mix themselves in the group there. Five bands for five dollars, seems pretty great to me.

WHAT: Paul Kothheimer, Michael Meadows

WHERE: The Clark Bar (free)

WHEN: Tuesday, June 25th at 7 p.m.

Champaign-Urbana Singer-Songwriter Collective shows continue at the Clark Bar again this week. This time around it will be acoustic fellows Paul Kothheimer and Michael Meadows. Meadows has performed a few times, but will take the stage once again over there.

EDITOR’S PICK: EVANGELICALS, COMMUNION
Mike ‘N Molly’s ($7) — Thursday, June 27th at 8 p.m.

Evangelicals have been around these parts a few times. Dating back to their appearance at 2008’s installment of Pygmalion Music Festival, they’re back in town again to show us what they’ve got. They’re on a short stint of a tour and they’re rounding it out at Mike ‘N Molly’s this week. They’ve been quietly writing, recording, and finishing they’re new record, which is a follow-up to their stellar 2008 record The Evening Descends, which came out on Dead Oceans. Pretty excited to see what new material they’ve been cooking up, and we’ll have the chance to see it when they’re in town on Thursday.

WHAT: Bookmobile!, Prologic Rebel Base Ensamble, Barrowe

WHERE: The Brass Rail ($5)

WHEN: Thursday, June 27th at 10 p.m.

Pretty great show going down at one of the best places in town this week in the Brass Rail. Bookmobile! is a new project featuring Trevor Dowdy as well as Luke Bergkoetter of Take Care/Withershins/AK-AK. Prologic Rebel Base Ensemble is a project of Matthis Helmick, and Barrowe joins in on the fun as well. Awesome show lined up in a place that should be hosting more shows.

WHAT: Lady Beast, We Must Dismantle All This, Bailout, This Is The Enemy, Dino Bravo

WHERE: Error Records ($5)

WHEN: Friday, June 28th

It doesn’t take very long to figure out that Lady Beast is, um, a heavy metal band. We know that much, as well as the fact that they’re on tour at the moment and teaming up with a couple of locals at Error Records, WMDAT! and Dino Bravo. In addition, semi-ex-local outfit Bailout and Indianapolis’ This Is The Enemy combine for a brutal front of rock this week.

WHAT: Enta, Hospital Ships, Hot Cops, Cassius

WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($5)

WHEN: Friday, June 28th at 8 p.m.

Excellent post-hardcore outfit Enta take over Mike ‘N Molly’s this week with a couple of familiar faces. Chicago’s Hot Cops are no strangers to these parts, and ex-Panel Van crew Cassius is ready to go as well. Special guests Hospital Ships are joining in as well. Solid stuff here on Friday night, no doubt.

WHAT: Vaudevileins, Faux Paw, Jarrel Young, Misfit Music

WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($7)

WHEN: Saturday, June 29th at 8 p.m.

Local rockers Vaudevileins headline this mixture of artists on Saturday night at Mike ‘N Molly’s. Indiana’s Faux Paw has been around C-U once or twice, if I recall, performing with Grandkids a few times. Local emcee Jarrel Young and MIsfit Music provide a hip-hop edge to this show, which creates an interesting mixture of bands on the bill.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

WHAT: That’s No Moon, So Long Forgotten, Thin Gin, Cloud Gavin

WHERE: Cowboy Monkey ($5)

WHEN: Saturday, June 29th at 8:30 p.m.

Local indie-rock outfit That’s No Moon headlines this show over at Cowboy Monkey on Saturday. They’re joined by Chicago/Champaign’s So Long Forgotten, Thin Gin (playing for the second time this week, as they’re a part of the Error Records show earlier in the week), and Danville’s Cloud Gavin. That’s No Moon has been taking a break from shows to finish up their new album, titled at the moment as Hyperion. Look for them to perform a bunch of new material at this show.

WHAT: Blues, Brews and BBQ Festival

WHERE: Downtown Champaign

WHEN: Friday, June 28th and Saturday, June 29th

The annual Blues, Brews and BBQ Festival takes over Downtown Champaign this weekend. There are a bunch of bands slated this year again, and we’ll be taking a closer look at this later in the week. You can see all the bands performing and their set times here. Obviously, it goes without saying, there are a ton of beer and BBQ vendors at the event along with the music, so head over there and exercise your taste buds as well.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

WHAT: Duke of Uke and His Novelty Orchestra

WHERE: Alto Vineyards

WHEN: Saturday, June 29th at 7:30 p.m.

I don’t have a lot of information about this show, other than the basic facts. They’ll be performing at Blues, Brews and BBQ, as well as Alto Vineyards on Saturday. They’re working on new material, which I would imagine will be on display for either of these shows on Saturday.

WHAT: Betse Ellis

WHERE: The Iron Post ($6)

WHEN: Sunday, June 30th at 7 p.m.

Fiddler Betse Ellis will be performing at the Iron Post on Sunday evening. Part old-time celebrant and part contemporary songwriter, Betse is committed to purveying the breadth of possibilities within the folk format. She blends traditional source material with her own original works and presents a diverse sound that refuses to be labeled concretely. Citing influences from John Hartford to Joe Strummer, she traverses musical realms and pushes the boundaries of how folk music can be understood and imagined in the modern age.
