The Overture: Oct. 12 – 18

WHAT: Jennifer Knapp, Mike Ingram

WHERE: Canopy Club ($15 advance)

WHEN: Tuesday, October 12th at 7:00 p.m.

Jennifer Knapp (best known for the Christian Rock hit “Undo Me“) made more than a few headlines earlier this year when she announced that she is a lesbian. I’ll direct you to Tracy’s fantastic interview with her in lieu of writing something myself that would probably be pretty clumsy. Local man about town and musician extraordinaire Mike Ingram will kick things off at 7:00, followed by Jennifer Knapp a bit later.

WHAT: pmtoday

WHERE: Red Herring ($TBA)

WHEN: Thursday, October 14th at 6:30 p.m.

Its always good to see the Herring putting on shows — it’s one of the best places in town to see music. This time around they’ve got PMtoday, a prog group from Little Rock, Arkansas, who will make a stop on an off-day from a tour supporting the Almost.

WHAT: Smoker’s Club Tour with Curren$y, Big K.R.I.T., Smoke DZA, Fiend, Corner Boy P

WHERE: Highdive ($20)

WHEN: Thursday, October 14th at 8:30 p.m.

New Orleans based Curren$y is making major waves with Pilot Talk, which is–blog hype aside–one of the best albums of the year (guest roster: Mos Def, Jay Electronica, Devin the Dude, and…Snoop Dogg). Since he’s currently in the midst of the aptly-named Smoker’s Club Tour, we’re expecting a bit of a hazy evening at the Highdive.

WHAT: Oh My God, Withershins, Music for 5 Year Olds

WHERE: Cowboy Monkey ($7)

WHEN: Thursday, October 14th at 9:30 p.m.

“Organ-based, grinding glam rock that is both schizophrenic and sentimental, driving from delicate to destructive in a matter of notes: oh my god is un stop able.”

Consider me sold. Supporting sets from Music for 5 Year Olds (that’s Anthony Gravino’s new band) and Withershins don’t hurt either.

WHAT: New Ruins, others TBA

WHERE: Analog Outfitters (free)

WHEN: Saturday, October 16th at 3:00 p.m.

Analog Outfitters is yet another of those fantastic businesses tucked away in downtown Champaign (north Neil St. near Washington, in this case). They specialize in “Hammond Organs, Leslie speakers, Fender amplifiers, vintage tube audio equipment, and unique studio gear” and are running an expo of sorts this Saturday at 3 p.m.,  which will feature free food, drink and live music, including New Ruins. And if that doesn’t float your boat, there’s always that Drake show over in Bloomington-Normal.
