Smile Politely

The Overture: Sept. 27 – Oct. 3

WHAT: Cymbals Eat Guitars, The Leadership, Millimeter Mountain

WHERE: Canopy Club ($10 advance)

WHEN: Tuesday, September 28th

If you enjoyed this weekend’s Cap’n Jazz set (and man, was it ever a good one), you should give Cymbals Eat Guitars a listen. Their mix of raw energy, guitar acrobatics and Pinkerton-esque earnestness places them firmly under the Kinsella umbrella — but don’t consider that a knock, as it is a big umbrella. Locals the Leadership (ex Tall Tale, Organic Flow and Jon Childers) and Millimeter Mountain (ex Mordechai in the Mirror) support.

WHAT: Jessie Torrisi & the Please, Please Me, Bob & Pricilla, Don’t Ask

WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s

WHEN: Thursday, September 30th

Here’s the best reason to hope that it warms up a bit — this 55 degree weather is no fun, and it would be a shame to stick Jessie Torrisi’s voice in M&M’s tiny upstairs room.

WHAT: Wiz Khalifa, Yelawolf, DJ Bonics

WHERE: Canopy Club (sold out)

WHEN: Thursday, September 30th at 6:30 p.m.

This show is sold out for a good reason — Wiz Khalifa pretty much is underground hip hop at this point. If you haven’t heard Kush and Orange Juice by now, you’ve gone past missing out and are now entering flat-out delinquent territory. You may want to stick around for the late show on this one too, since we hear some band called Blitzen Trapper is playing.

WHAT: Marc Ribot

WHERE: Krannert Art Museum (free)

WHEN: Friday, October 1st at 7:30 p.m.

Jazz and avant-garde fans will undoubtedly be familiar with Marc Ribot’s genre-bending guitar work. If you’re unfamiliar, I’ll just say he’s worked with everyone from John Zorn to Tom Waits. The show will serve as the CD release for his latest album, Silent Movies, composed for solo guitar.

WHAT: D3l Dot, Materielle, Kurt Werner

WHERE: Caffe Paradiso (free)

WHEN: Friday, October 1st at 7:30 p.m.

If you’re an electronica fan, but have been left cold by too many DJ sets, you may want to check out this show. All three artists will be performing live sets, with visuals by Ria Roberts. Kurt Werner and Materielle (aka Chris Howaniec) provide the cool little noisy bits in World’s First Flying Machine, so if you’re intrigued by those, this is your spot on Friday night. Or, as the Facebook event says, grab a coffee and get your mind blown.

WHAT: Itzhak Perlman and Rohan de Silva

WHERE: Krannert Center

WHEN: Saturday, October 3rd at 7:30 p.m.

Here’s one that doesn’t even need a writeup. It’s Itzhak fucking Perlman, one of the greatest violinists to ever live. Did I mention that it’s a mere $10 if you’re a UIUC student?
