Did you know about free pie Mondays at Courier Cafe? Culture Editor Louise and I went last Monday for lunch at Courier Cafe to check out pie situation at the Urbana diner. After lunch, we picked our flavor of pie. Flavors rotate daily, but that day, they had chocolate silk, coconut, lemon, and apple pie slices. We chose chocolate silk and lemon meringue.
The chocolate silk pie was awesome. Topped with chocolate shavings and fresh whipped cream, the chocolate filling was fudgy, sweet, and so delicious. The lemon meringue slice had two beautiful, distinct layers: a fluffy meringue with a light, toasty top and a sweet, tart lemon filling. We both agreed that the lemon meringue was no match for the yummy chocolate silk slice. Sadly, the lemon part was almost like a lemon jelly instead of a richer, thicker consistency. That said, there’s options to pick from daily, and all pie slices are freaking free after 11 a.m.
Open for more than 40 years, Courier Cafe has operated in Urbana. About a year ago, the restaurant got new owners that kept most of the menu the same including the beloved diner’s breakfast favorites and milkshakes.
Visit on a Monday, so you can get that sweet, free pie for dessert after lunch or dinner.
