Eric Calderwood is an Associate Professor of Comparative and World Literature at the University of Illinois. He will be giving a talk about his latest book, On Earth or in Poems: The many Lives of Al-Andalus. Al-Andalus (Muslim Iberia) refers to a legendary place where people from the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe — Jews, Christians, and Muslims — lived together in peace. In this book Calderwood beautifully illustrates how people all around the world have used the memory of al-Andalus to create culture and community, and to imagine new possibilities for the future.
