Habitat for Humanity announces two new builds to celebrate 25 years in C-U

It is no secret that Habitat for Humanity does some great work in Champaign-Urbana, but I had no idea that they had been going strong for an entire quarter-century! Next year, they’ll celebrate by constructing two houses in Urbana, backed by local houses of worship of all faiths.

The builds will kick off in September, and Habitat is always looking for volunteers throughout this time.

Habitat for Humanity will be celebrating 25 years of bringing people together to help build strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter in 2017.  In recognition of this anniversary year, Habitat plans to construct 2 homes in Urbana with the financial and interfaith support from community churches, temples, mosques and houses of worship.  Representing all the major monotheistic religions—Islam, Judaism, and Christianity—local faith groups will be joining together to provide a “hand up” working alongside two local Habitat homeowners in the coming year.

Initial outreach has generated interest from over 20 faith groups, and participation is welcomed from any Champaign County faith group. Habitat plans to ceremoniously “kick off” the builds September 11, 2016 (A National day of Service and Remembrance) with each participating group adding soil from their place of worship to the build sites in Urbana.  A weeklong blitz build to get the homes secured for the winter months will take place later in the fall, with the homes being completed in the spring of 2017.  Faith group volunteers will be participating alongside other faiths in collaborative service and community engagement.  For more information or how to be involved please contact Kelly Hill, Habitat Development Director [email protected]
