Heavy Spoon ice cream bar is closed

Anna Longworth-Singer

Heavy Spoon, the ice cream and cereal bar of Downtown Champaign, is closed. The business has been empty for a while now. In early January, I reached out to the ownership for comment, but they have not returned my messages. Now, Google says the business is permanently closed.

Opened in November 2022, Heavy Spoon offered ice cream cones, bowls, and milkshakes with cereal toppings and other fun garnishes. Caitlin wrote about the red velvet bubbled waffle, and I enjoyed the Heavy caramel drip shake. Jess liked the waffle with vanilla ice cream, Cinnamon Toast Crunch Rolls, bananas, whipped cream, and hot fudge drizzle, and last year, Matt wrote a full review of the dessert shop.

Two desserts are on a red table at Heavy Spoon in Downtown Champaign, a Black-owned restaurants. The left is a white cup with a sticker reading Heavy Spoon which vanilla ice cream topped with hot fudge and Reese Pieces. Beside it is a clear cup with a Heavy Spoon sticker, cereal stuck to the outside with frosting, and a red-and-white striped paper straw. Photo by Alyssa Buckley.

It’s sad to see another local business close, and this is an important reminder for us to keep supporting Champaign-Urbana restaurants and dessert shops that we love, so they won’t become yet another empty space.
