Although we’ve been experiencing some cold temps in C-U over the last week or so, thankfuly we’re not experiencing what happened 30 years ago.
Although the dates were February 14-15, 1990, the St. Valentine’s Day Ice Storm happened in Champaign-Urbana, and caused a great deal of damage throughout the community for weeks after it hit.
Per this journal article written by researchers at the University of Illinois Department of Atmospheric Sciences, over $12 million in damages to be exact. A Google search will showcase a variety of photos and such from that time, but you can digest what that time was like through this video:
