ISM brings a Spring Awakening to this unseasonable fall

Illini Student Musicals is opening their fall show, Spring Awakening, tomorrow evening at 7 p.m. The modern adaptation of a turn-of-the (previous) century German play features folk music written by Duncan Sheik interspersed with alt.rock rife with swearing, sex, and violence. So, all the good stuff.

Annnnnnd all the bad stuff, too. These kids have a really rough time getting to adulthood, enough to make you understand all the cane-shaking “back-in-my-day-ing” you get from olds these days. Confusion leads to questionable consent, pride leads to destitution, and ghosts try to prevent attempted suicide.

If you’re looking for the usual light and fluffy toe-tapping musical, I’m sure there are other endeavors in town that may suit you. If you want to think about your life and how you got where you are, if you’re ready for a night of theatre that will affect you, consider Spring Awakening.

Shows are Thursday – Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Lincoln Hall Theatre on the quad. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased online or at the door.
