It Happens Here: Survivor-centered event premieres at U of I

April is Sexual Assault Awareness month and tomorrow evening the University will join the It Happens Here project to host an event.

From the release:

The survivor-centered event will occur Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at 7:00 PM in the Student Dining and Residential Programs (SDRP) building, Room 2025.

The It Happens Here (IHH) Project was started by Middlebury College survivors and allies who believe recognition and discussion of the problem is the first step towards change. Students share stories of their experiences as survivors of sexual violence by submitting them anonymously and have them read by other students at a public event on campus. By focusing on location, personal narrative, and anonymity, IHH campaigns empower survivors to use their personal stories to illuminate the prevalence and human impact of sexual violence while sidestepping the traditional problems involved in a survivor coming forward.

It Happens Here UIUC is the biggest IHH event in the organization’s history. Submissions of student stories were sought from mid-March up until April 2.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month continues throughout the month of April. The University of Illinois is committed to creating and sustaining a campus environment where sexual violence is unacceptable and survivors are supported. This April, we pledge to “shatter the silence” around sexual violence — to start talking, to keep listening, and to create conversation around the movement to end this social problem. Partners on campus and in the community have planned a host of events to raise awareness around this local, national and international problem. All events are free and open to the public.

For a full schedule of Sexual Assault Awareness Month events, including times and locations, please see the attached schedule or visit http://go.illinois.edu/saam2015.

It Happens Here is brought to UIUC by student activism, in partnership with the Women’s Resources Center, University Housing, Rape Advocacy Counseling & Education Services, Campus Acquaintance Rape Education and the IHH Project nationally.
