It’s time to nominate for the annual MLK Jr. celebration

The 2019 Countywide Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Committee is seeking nominations for the 18th annual event that will take place at Vineyard Church in Urbana on January 18th at 5 p.m. Nominations are due by Friday, November 9th at 5 p.m., and you can go to mlkcelebration.org or call (217) 384-2466 to request a nomination form. Here are descriptions of the awards:

The James R. Burgess, Jr. Award, Susan Freiburg Humanitarian Award: honors the humanitarian efforts of individuals who have contributed to the basic human dignity of those in need.

The Doris Hoskins Prestigious Community Service Award: honors individuals who engage in improving the well-being of Champaign County.

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Outstanding Achievement Award: honors individuals or organizations that work for social justice in the spirit of Dr. King. The principles of justice that Dr. King espoused include promoting equal rights for all persons regardless of race, religion, economic status, or physical or mental ability.

The committee consists of representatives from from the City of Champaign, the City of Urbana, Champaign County, Parkland College, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the Village of Rantoul.
