Jackie Joyner-Kersee will be this year’s U of I commencement speaker

The decorated Olympic athlete has amazing list of accomplishments:

  • Competed in four Olympic games
  • First woman to win back to back gold medals in the heptathlon
  • First woman to break 7000 points in the heptathlon
  • First African American woman to win an Olympic medal in the long jump
  • One of ESPN’s 50 greatest athletes of all time
  • Sports Illustrated female athlete of the 20th century

So you know, no big deal.

Her foundation, the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation, began partnering with the College of ACES and the University of Illinois Extension in 2019, providing “programming and engagement around metropolitan food systems, agriculture, STEM, entrepreneurship, leadership and college readiness.” You can read more at the Illinois News Bureau.

U of I commencement is May 13th at 9:30 a.m. at Memorial Stadium.
