For lovers of free local music in Champaign-Urbana, Krannert’s (in partnership with Fox/Atkins Development, LLC and the University of Illinois) Outside at the Research Park series is an awesome community asset. Today, they announce their first show of the season on July 8th featuring local favorites Bones Jugs and Las Cafeteras.

Krannert Center for the Performing Arts once again joins forces with Fox/Atkins Development, LLC and the University of Illinois to present a FREE, live performance in the popular OUTSIDE at the Research Park series. OUTSIDE at the Research Park plays upon a simple concept: great music, fresh food, and a green state of mind in an open, relaxed environment. The performance space and seating area are located just south of the Atkins Building at the corner of First Street and St. Mary’s Road in Champaign. The tree-lined, grassy space has hosted thousands of audience members each summer since the inception of OUTSIDE in 2007. The 2016 OUTSIDE concert will continue to demonstrate Krannert Center’s commitment to reduce waste, decrease energy consumption, and provide environmentally friendly services to patrons.
The July 8 event will feature an emphasis on expanding monarch butterfly habitats in Champaign County through a partnership with the Prairie Rivers Network. Free exhibit space will be available to sustainability-minded local businesses and organizations whose work relates to issues surrounding the health of butterfly populations. Local favorites Bones Jugs get the evening simmering with an eclectic mix of acoustic jams fueled by an uncommon symphony of xylophone, kazoo, resonator guitar, upright bass, percussion, horns, and of course, bones and jugs!
Son Jarocho—a style of Mexican son music from Veracruz—is at the heart of Las Cafeteras’ appealing sound. They celebrate that tradition with a twist of Afro-Caribbean sounds, a bilingual fusion of poetic lyrics, and the exciting instrumentation of jarana, requinto, donkey jawbone, West African marimbol, cajón, and a wooden platform called the tarima used to dance zapateado.
Location, Parking, and Services
These concerts will be held just southwest of Assembly Hall on First Street in the Research Park. Free parking is available in the lot south of the Caterpillar Building at 1901 South First Street.
All performances are free and open to the general public.
Local food trucks will be parked nearby.
