Krannert Center is celebrating the Harlem Renaissance in November

This year is the 100th anniversary of the Harlem Renaissance, when, according to the event description, “New York City’s Harlem neighborhood became an African-American cultural mecca—an unrivaled center for an artistic outpouring of literature, music, and more fueled, in part, by such luminaries as Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, Ethel Waters, Langston Hughes, and Billie Holiday.”

Harlem-based musicians Mwenso and the Shakes will be performing, as well as special guests Brianna Thomas, Michela Marino Lerman, and Vuyo Sotashe, in a multimedia show that incorporates both music and dance.

The performance is happening November 14th at 7:30 p.m. There will also be performances earlier in the day, specifically for K-12 students as part of the Youth Series.
