Last week I shared that both the Champaign and Urbana Park Districts are hosting Juneteenth celebrations, on June 17th and 18th respectively. Now MTD is joining in with their own party on June 16th. It’s happening from 5 to 7 p.m. outside Illinois Terminal. The Juneteenth Bus will be on hand (you can also see it at the park district events), as well as Mama Duke’s Food Truck and DJ BJ Clark.

Urbana Youth Poet Laureate Danlya Nash will do a live poetry reading, and you can see her poem and one written by Urbana Poet Laureate Ja Nelle Davenport-Pleasure on display. If you venture into the terminal, you can see a new art installation from second and third graders at Booker T. Washington Elementary School. Their “Juneteenth-inspired” work will be there all summer, so if you miss the event you can still stop by and see it.

The event is free, and open to all.
