Any interested individuals can adopt any of the 100 MTD bus shelters across Champaign-Urbana with the newly released Adopt-a-Shelter program. You’ll be given a one-time monthly bus pass and cleaning supplies in return for the responsibility of cleaning the shelter once a month. Also, your name will be mentioned in MTD promotions as well as a sticker on the shelter.

On April 4, the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District (MTD) launched an Adopt-a-Shelter Program for the approximately 100 bus shelters in Champaign, Urbana, and Savoy, and on the University of Illinois campus. Anyone with an interest is invited to apply; those interested may include individuals, businesses, community groups, and student associations. Everyone is welcome to send in an application. Adopters will be acknowledged in MTD promotions and with a sticker affixed to the shelter.
Adopters will be given a (one time) Monthly Pass and cleaning supplies such as a broom and dustpan, squeegee and spray bottle, and trash bags. It is asked that the adopters clean their shelters at least once each month during the one-year term. Responsibilities include cleaning the shelter windows, picking/sweeping up litter, and ensuring that up-to-date information is posted at the shelter. It is asked that MTD be immediately notified of any damage, vandalism, or dangerous situation so that such problems can be quickly rectified.
MTD has a dedicated Maintenance team that routinely cares for the bus shelters. There’s nothing better, however, than having someone who is frequently at the shelter keep an eye on things. The adopter can readily note day-to-day changes and problems that may arise. It’s extremely important that the waiting environment be safe and tidy for MTD customers and adopters’ neighbors.

If there is a particular shelter the adopter has in mind, let MTD know. MTD will contact the interested party with all of the necessary information and send an application and waiver to be completed.
