With the 2020 census offering a refreshed look at the population of our community, the Champaign City Council is beginning the process of redistricting. We’ve already seen this happen at the federal and county level, with significant shifts in district maps. This will be sort of different, as the city council is non-partisan (though really everything is partisan).

As the process begins, the city is looking for community input. They’ve created a site called Engage Champaign for this purpose. It offers a pretty good explanation of what redistricting is all about, and offers you the opportunity to create your own redistricting map proposal.

The last redistricting happened after the 2010 census, and the City of Champaign has grown by about 7000 people since then. As shown by a table on the website, most current districts have seen population growth. The exception is District 4 (the central section of Champaign), which has shrunk very slightly.

The new map will be selected in time for filing for the 2025 Consolidated Election.
