The roadside ice cream shop Sidney Dairy Barn is now open for the season. On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings, Sidney Dairy Barn offers ice cream cones, bowls, pints, quarts, shakes, and signature tornadoes. Last weekend was opening weekend, and so my sweets-loving son and I took a drive out to the little ice cream shop.

I had the waffle cone with Heath ($6.75), and it was awesome. The chocolate ice cream was really delicious, and the waffle cone had a delightfully fresh crackIy-crunch. Chocolate ice cream would go well with any of the 31 toppings, but I loved the Heath’s chocolate-y toffee crunch with the creamy, sweet chocolate ice cream. This cone was excellent, no notes.

Even though he’d never seen a tornado on a menu, my kid was set on ordering one tornado ($5.75). He chose the swirled vanilla-chocolate ice cream with a hot fudge add in. This chocolate milkshake was great. Served with a spoon and no straw, this was a gigantic cup of fudgy ice cream, and it tasted yummy. I do think candy mix-ins might give more texture variety to the sweet shake. My kid even said that next time he would want a tornado with Oreos or crushed waffle cone, so there’d be a little crunch with the ice cream.

The ice cream shop is beloved, so often the line can be long, but this charming, little ice cream barn in the middle of some cornfields is worth the drive.
