Beginning Friday, February 2nd and running through the remainder of the year, The Black Joy Project at Spurlock Museum will celebrate “the beauty, joy, and resilience of Black women and girls and their lived experiences during COVID-19 and the social unrest after the brutal deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and others.”

Curated by Dr. Ruby Mendenhall and Florence Adibu, the project will include a museum display as well as numerous events for the community to be involved in: performances, talks, workshops, etc. Mendenhall is a professor of Sociology and African American Studies at the University of Illinois, as well as the Associate Dean for Diversity and Democratization of Health Innovation of the Carle Illinois College of Medicine. Adibu is a research scientist at Carle Illinois College of Medicine.

The first event, an opening reception, is happening Friday, February 2nd from 4 to 6 p.m. It’s free and open to all.
